The Frostrail demo runs October 19-26, 2026 for Steam Next Fest: what is in it, how long it takes, whether it saves, and how it differs from the playtest.
Frostrail Demo Dates: Window, Content and Save Rules
The Frostrail demo is a Steam Next Fest build, which means it has a hard end date and a fixed amount of content. Both facts matter more than usual here, because the game is a survival loop with no save, and the window closes on a Monday morning in Pacific time.
Quick answer: The demo runs October 19–26, 2026 as part of Steam Next Fest, and it ends Monday, October 26 at 10:00 PT. It contains three explorable areas and roughly 60–90 minutes of objectives, supports solo and up to four-player co-op, and has no save or continue option — plan to finish in one sitting. There is no announced carryover into Early Access.
The exact dates and times
Frostrail's demo went live on October 19, 2026, the opening day of Steam Next Fest's October edition, and the store page describes it as available "until October 26". The developer's own posts use the same 19–26 range.
The closing time is the part people miss. Steam Next Fest windows end at 10:00 Pacific on the final day, which is:
| Time zone | Demo closes |
|---|---|
| Pacific (PT) | 10:00, Monday October 26 |
| Eastern (ET) | 13:00, Monday October 26 |
| UK (GMT) | 17:00, Monday October 26 |
| Central Europe (CET) | 18:00, Monday October 26 |
| China (CST) | 01:00, Tuesday October 27 |
| Japan (JST) | 02:00, Tuesday October 27 |
If you are in Asia or Oceania, the demo effectively ends on Tuesday morning local time. Do not plan a Monday evening session in those zones.
What is actually in the demo
Three things, and the store page lists them plainly: explore three areas, conduct the Eden Engine, and scavenge and craft supplies. Combat with Revenants sits on top of all three.
In practice the build is a tutorial chain rather than a sandbox:
- A snowbound station where you learn movement, looting and the weight cap.
- The locomotive cab and the Eden Engine, where you light the furnace and drive one junction.
- A village loot run and a boarded-up bunker that acts as the demo's first dungeon.
Our full walkthrough covers the objective order and the one step people get stuck on — ignition is a separate interaction from loading fuel.
How long is it? 60–90 minutes for a first run, longer if you explore. The demo is a vertical slice, not a chunk of the open world; you will see the whole loop once, not a piece of a larger map.

Does the demo save your progress?
No. The October build exposes no save or continue option. Closing the game ends the run, and starting again begins from the tutorial.
That is normal for a Next Fest demo and it is also the reason the demo is co-op-friendly: there is no campaign state to desync, no host save to migrate and no reason not to join someone else's session for an hour. It is also why you should not treat the demo as a progression test — nothing you build carries anywhere.

Demo vs playtest: what changed
Frostrail ran a playtest earlier in 2026 before the public demo, and the two are different products with different access rules.
| Playtest (April 2026) | Next Fest demo (October 2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Sign-up / Steam Playtest request | Open to everyone |
| Duration | Limited test window | October 19–26 only |
| Content | Fueling, scavenging, recycling, crafting, Revenants, early dungeons | Three areas, engine tutorial, one bunker |
| Save | Not applicable | No save |
| Purpose | Systems feedback | Public sampler |
| Carryover | None | None announced |
The playtest's brief is where several of the game's systems were first described in public — it explicitly told testers to "fuel up and conduct your train". If you read older coverage that mentions a playtest code or a sign-up form, that route is closed; the demo requires no key.
How to download it
- Open the Frostrail Steam store page (app 3517740).
- Use the Download Demo button on the right-hand panel. It installs as a separate library entry called "Frostrail Demo".
- Launch it directly — there is no launcher, account or sign-up step.
- For co-op, one player hosts and the others join from the Steam friends list.
You do not need to own the game, pre-order it or wishlist it to play the demo. Wishlisting does help the game's Next Fest visibility, which is the point of the event.
What happens after October 26? The demo's availability is not guaranteed. Some Next Fest demos stay downloadable for months; others are delisted when the event ends. If you want to see it, play it before the window closes rather than assuming it will still be there next week.
Does demo progress carry into Early Access?
Unconfirmed. Neither the developer nor the store page has said that demo progress transfers, and the demo has no save file to transfer in the first place.
The Spring 2026 development update describes progression being kept between levels within a campaign, which is a different claim from carrying a demo save into a retail build. The release date page tracks what is confirmed about Early Access; as of October 25, 2026, the window is Q4 2026 with no date or price.
Given the demo is a tutorial slice, the realistic expectation is a fresh start in Early Access with, at most, a cosmetic acknowledgement. Do not grind the demo for progression.
Is the demo worth playing if I am already sold?
Yes, for two reasons that are not about content.
First, it answers the performance question. Frostrail is an Unreal Engine 5 game, and the demo is the only way to know how it runs on your machine before buying. The system requirements page lists the official specs, but a demo run is better evidence than a spec sheet.
Second, it answers the co-op question. Four-player survival games live or die on whether the lobby works and whether roles are legible in play. An hour with three friends tells you more than any trailer.
